ICOLMA - Project update 2

From November 26 to 28, 2024, RER (Tanja Schnittfinke, Wolfgang Scholz and Stefan Greiving) and IPS (Nthoki D. Nyamai and Sophie Schramm) welcomed our project partners from the Federal University of ABC in São Paulo, the University of Cape Town and the University of Western Cape in Dortmund.

This workshop was significant for the ICOLMA project, which addresses the impact of COVID-19 on the livelihoods, mobility and accessibility of marginalized groups. It provided an opportunity to deepen our joint analysis and strengthen our publication strategies to ensure a successful completion of the project in March 2025.

The program included, among other things

  • Presentation of key findings: The partners from the respective cities presented findings from their space-time cluster analyses and thematic research. These formed the basis for in-depth discussions on challenges shared by all case studies and country-specific conclusions.
  • Livelihood assessment: Illustrative case studies are used to compare the living conditions and strategies of different marginalized groups during the pandemic in order to analyze similarities and differences in the study areas.
  • Strategic planning: In collaboration with the PROPASP research project "Planning with Global Comparison", we developed a clear framework for the next project steps in meetings on comparison strategies, dissemination and publication planning. We also discussed possibilities for future collaboration and stronger science communication.

The workshop was a productive step forward that prepared us well for the tasks ahead. The week impressively demonstrated how valuable personal collaboration is for focused discussions and collective reflection. A joint dinner in an informal atmosphere also helped to strengthen collaboration.
